Car Seat Checks

The Burnsville Police Department offers free car seat checks to help parents and caregivers make sure seats are installed safely. A certified technician will walk you through proper installation so you feel confident every time you buckle in your child.

We have three certified technicians and are able to assist in Spanish (please request this when making an appointment).

Child Passenger Safety Law

  • Children under 8 and shorter than 4’9” must be in a federally approved safety or booster seat
  • Infants must ride rear-facing until at least 20 pounds and 1 year old (though it’s safest to stay rear-facing until age 2)
  • Seats must be used and installed according to manufacturer instructions
  • Drivers are responsible for ensuring all passengers are in the proper seat or seat belt
  • Violations are a petty misdemeanor with a $50 fine

Note: The law sets minimum standards - best practice is often to keep kids rear-facing and in booster seats longer for maximum safety.
