Habitat Management

Burnsville’s prairies and oak savannas are bursting with life—when nature gets the care it needs! Our Natural Resources team works to restore and protect these high-quality natural areas by controlling invasive species and bringing back native plants. From carefully planned controlled burns to large-scale habitat restoration, we’re helping our landscapes thrive for generations to come.

Controlled Burns

Historically, natural and Indigenous-set fires shaped Burnsville’s ecosystems, helping prairies and savannas thrive. Fire suppression led to overgrowth, invasive species and habitat loss.

Why Controlled Burns Matter

  • Restore nutrients to the soil
  • Suppress invasive species like buckthorn
  • Support oak regeneration by maintaining open understory conditions
  • Encourage rapid plant regrowth after burning

Our Approach

  • Burns occur every 2–6 years in targeted areas
  • Conducted by trained professionals in spring and fall
  • Approved annually by the Fire Department and Minnesota DNR
