The City of Burnsville has ordinances in place that help ensure homes and other property are well-maintained, safe and don’t impact the quality of life of others in a neighborhood.
Common Property Maintenance Violations
Below are common ordinances and regulations. View the Property Maintenance Code for full details. Possible violations can be reported online from our Report a Concern page.
- Grass should be kept under 8 inches tall.
- Regular mowing and removal of noxious weeds or overgrown shrubs is required.
- If violations aren’t corrected, the City may arrange mowing by a licensed contractor, with costs added to your property taxes
- Store garbage containers in your garage or within 5 feet of the side of your house/garage.
- Garbage containers placed in front of the house or garage can be considered a violation.
- Bring containers back in promptly after pickup.
- Items not meant for outdoor use (such as household goods) should be stored in a shed, garage, or other approved area.
- Construction and landscaping materials may only be stored outside if they’re being used right away.
- Remove or recycle discarded appliances as soon as possible.
- Inoperable vehicles (those that cannot be repaired or safely driven) must be stored inside a garage or removed from the property.
- Unlicensed or unregistered vehicles may be stored in a driveway or garage, but may not be driven on public roads.
- Dead or dying trees should be removed to prevent disease spread and property damage.
- Consider hiring a professional tree trimmer or licensed arborist to assess and correct issues before they worsen.
- All tree work must be done by a tree contractor licensed in Burnsville. View the list of licensed contractors.
- Replace or repair missing or rotting deck boards, railings, or steps immediately to prevent injuries
- Keep roofs and siding in good condition. Replacing damaged shingles or siding prevents water leaks, costly repairs and keeps neighborhoods looking their best.

- Keep outdoor pools maintained in clean, good working order and secured with a fence.
- Inspect fences and gates regularly, repairing any damage right away to keep children and pets safe.
- Inspect fences regularly to keep them safe and in good condition.
- Prevent trees or shrubs from growing into chain link fences.
- Maintain paneled fences with weather-resistant paint or stain.
- Replace missing or damaged panels promptly.
