Our Commitment to the Community

Our Vision: Burnsville is a vibrant city, boldly leading and welcoming to all.

Values—We believe our service to the community makes a difference through:

Respect: We pay attention to people and perspectives with courtesy, dignity, and understanding.

Belonging: We value difference, creating a community where people feel at home.

Stewardship: We care for resources to best serve the community of today and tomorrow.

Adaptability: We will create a better future through continual improvement and adjusting to an ever-changing environment.

Ethical: We do what's right, just, and fair, guided by transparency and honesty. 

Our Strategic Priorities

Our strategic priorities are our commitments to the community. Affirmed by the Council, these are the six lenses we use to do our work. They guide our behavior - helping us deliver the right results to the community and measure our success.

Safety iconSafety — Burnsville is committed to the safety and wellbeing of our community and staff

For that reason, we will:

  1. Honor our three fallen heroes as we navigate the first anniversary of February 18 and national memorials
  2. Continue expanding the behavioral health unit to care for the mental health in our community
  3. Update the fire department standards of coverage

Community Engagement iconCommunity Engagement — Burnsville is committed to meaningful relationships and experiences that meet the variety of needs in our community

For that reason, we will:

  1. Complete the community survey and over communicate the results
  2. Implement and evaluate the neighborhood organization and grant pilot program
  3. Plan for interim website enhancements to address accessibility mandates and prepare for a comprehensive website redesign project

For that reason, we will:

  1. Define a culture of accountability where everyone takes responsibility with ambition for their performance and results
  2. Evaluate wellbeing initiatives to the needs of our employees
  3. Create a plan for centralized employee communication where everything the team needs is in one place

community vibrancy iconCommunity Vibrancy — Burnsville is committed to creating energy that continues to bring our community to life for years to come. 

For that reason, we will:

  1. Introduce the community vision initiative
  2. Update zoning and subdivision code
  3. Enhance housing and safety programs

Transportation iconInfrastructure — Burnsville is committed to responsible stewardship of assets to allow our community to thrive.

For that reason, we will:

  1. Manage phase one of police city hall construction project
  2. Complete four operational studies and seven capital studies
  3. Advocate for state and federal funding for water treatment plant renovation and Highway 13 and Nicollet

Sustainability iconSustainability — Burnsville is committed to innovation that supports environmental, human and financial vitality for our community and future generations

For that reason, we will:

  1. Establish enterprise resource planning (ERP) project team to plan replacement of budgeting, finance, human resources and utilities systems
  2. Continue corrective action by completing policy and starting records management projects
  3. Develop and implement robust natural resource and environmental education for the community

Strategic Monitoring

Every year, the leadership team drafts a work plan outlining the most important actions we are taking to bring our vision and strategic priorities to life. Quarterly, we present a strategic priority monitoring report to share the status of each action along with opportunities and challenges.
